HuMUN Debating Competition

On Saturday a group of thirteen Year 9 and students took part in the second Huish MUN (HuMUN) in Richard Huish College, Taunton. The students were split into three delegations representing the nations of the United Kingdom, Cuba and Bahrain. They covered a wide variety of topics from the use of AI in warfare, the Fall of the Berlin Wall, how to improve Public Health Education across the globe, the issue of capital punishment and deep-sea mining. Our delegates were hugely successful in passing multiple resolutions within these committees and played a vital role in supporting and shaping the debates that occurred.

Following a vibrant morning of debates, our delegates took part in a General Assembly discussing Online safety for young people. Our delegates again played a vital role in this debate with our UK delegation successfully passing the first motion calling for a social media ban for under 16-year-olds to be supported by the UN and our Cuban delegation take to the floor for their first major speech in a MUN setting.

In recognition for our delegates hard work, two were awarded awards by their committee chairs:

  • Kieran was awarded Honourable Delegate for his role in successfully spearheading the passage of the only motion passed within the Human Rights Committee.
  • Mason was awarded Best Delegate in the Historical Committee for calling for peace and de-escalation Germany following the fall of the Berlin Wall.

We are so proud of all of our delegates both for their performance in the debates, especially given the majority had never taken part in a MUN competition before and, how they represented Haygrove School on the day.
