Key Stage 3 (Y7,8 & 9)
It is a big step for students transferring from primary school to a large secondary school. The first few weeks of the Autumn Term are an induction period designed to help students settle into life at Haygrove and gain confidence.
All students will be encouraged to develop good habits and organisations skills to ensure they are able to reach their potential.
At Key Stage 3 all students study:
- Art & Design
- Computing
- Design Technology including Food & Nutrition
- Drama/Dance
- English Language and Literature
- Geography
- History
- Health and Citizenship
- Mathematics
- Modern Foreign Languages
- Music
- PE
- Philosophy and Ethics
- Science
As a guideline, during Year 7 students will have, each week, 4 hours of Maths and of English, 3 hours of Science and of a Modern Foreign Language, 2 hours of PE, 2 hours of DT (including Food & Nutrition), 1 hour of Computing, 1 hour each of Geography and History, 1 hour of Art/Textiles, 1 hour of Music/Drama, 1 hour of Citizenship and 1 hour of Philosophy and Ethics.

Year 7
Students are taught in their tutor groups for most lessons throughout Year 7, but grouped by ability for lessons in Mathematics and in English. Students who enter the school with low literacy or numeracy skills are given additional support through 1:1 tuition and other appropriate interventions.
Year 8
Students are separated into ability groups in Mathematics, English and Science. Students continue to study the Modern Foreign Language they began in Year 7.
Year 9
Year 9 is a vitally important year for students as they start to prepare for their GCSEs and we place a great deal of emphasis on progress and achievement in their academic work.
Students continue to work at Key Stage 3 throughout Year 9 but they may start aspects of the GCSE curriculum in preparation for Years 10 and 11.
In January every student will need to make important decisions about choosing GCSE and other qualifications they will continue to study in Years 10 and 11. They will discuss this with their teachers throughout the year. It is important that parents begin to talk about the future with their child too. There will be an Pathway Evening in January with further information on what choices are available for your child.
