Yew Wah Chinese Partnership

Our link with Yew Wah International Education Foundation, established in 2007, continues to go from strength to strength. Our most recent cohort of students joined us in June 2023.

We are fortunate to connect with students and staff from four campuses in China, with plans to expand to other schools and to accommodate greater numbers with each visit. Each group visits Haygrove School for three weeks, and our purpose built International Friendship Centre forms a base from which the groups can explore teaching and learning in a Western environment.

We have embedded the delivery of lessons by our visitors in various curriculum areas such as Art, Music and Geography to ensure that students at Haygrove School benefit from a different perspective and authentic materials to enhance learning.

All students in Year 9 and Year 10 are offered the opportunity to ‘buddy’ a visiting Chinese student and accompany them to lessons and a rich after school programme of fun activities. The buddying system includes formal training for each student taking part, regular updates of their profiles and a loyalty scheme as recognition of their participation.

In 2016 Yew Wah opened the Knowle Hall Somerset Cultural Centre which acommodates visits from younger Chinese student in Years 6 and 8. We are delighted to be able to provide every Haygrove Year 8 student with the opportunity to spend two days working collaboratively with the Chinese students, focusing on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals – not to mention socialising and understanding life as a young person from a very different culture.
