History Department WWI Battlefields Trip

Year 8 and 9 students took part in an unforgettable History Department trip to the Somme and Ypres, exploring some of the most significant sites of the First World War. Throughout the visit, students demonstrated exceptional curiosity, maturity, and empathy as they deepened their understanding of the experiences of soldiers on the Western Front.

The group spent time on the Somme, where they learned about the scale of the battle, the challenges faced by soldiers, and the lasting impact of the conflict. Students asked thoughtful questions, engaged brilliantly with guides, and showed a genuine desire to understand the human stories behind the history.

In Ypres, the group visited key memorials and cemeteries before taking part in the moving Last Post Ceremony at the Menin Gate. Representing the school with pride, students laid a wreath in remembrance of those who lost their lives. Their respectful conduct and quiet reflection during the ceremony were deeply commendable.

Across the entire trip, staff were incredibly proud of how students conducted themselves. They showed empathy when learning about individual soldiers, confidence when asking and answering questions, and a real enthusiasm for exploring the past.

It was a privilege to take such a thoughtful and engaged group of young historians, and they represented the school superbly throughout.
