Haygrove hosts Debating Competition

Haygrove School was delighted to welcome students from both Queen's College, Taunton and Robert Blake School for a lively and intellectually stimulating debating competition.

Across two complex and challenging debates ranging from the banning of all forms of entertainment involving animals to the right of ownership of territory on the moon, students from all three schools impressed with their thoughtful arguments, confident delivery, and respectful engagement with opposing viewpoints. The standard of debate was exceptionally high, reflecting the enthusiasm and preparation of everyone involved.

A special mention must go to all of those students across all three schools for whom this was their first Debating Competition as their attitude and effort was exemplary, with many growing into their roles across the two debates with some eager for a third round of debating!

The event provided a valuable opportunity to develop critical thinking, public speaking, and collaboration. Students thoroughly enjoyed the experience, with many commenting on how rewarding it was to engage with peers from another school.

There was a shared sense of excitement that this may be the first of many joint competitions between Haygrove School, Queen's College and Robert Blake.

A huge thank you to everyone who helped make the event such a success:

  • Mr Williams for organising the competition.
  • Miss Knott, Mr Darby, Miss Gregg, and Mr Williams for their time and expertise in judging.
  • Mr Caddy, Mr Tourle, Phoebe and Tobias for their time and expertise in chairing.
  • Mrs Mills, Deputy Head Teacher of Haygrove School for opening the event.
  • Miss Cotton for crafting the wonderful medals and trophies.
  • Mrs E Baker (Robert Blake School) and Mrs N Perry (Queens College) for organising their students for participation.
  • And the families who came along to watch and support our students.

Well done to all of the students who participated and received awards for their debating on the night. We look forward to many more opportunities to celebrate academic excellence and collaboration.
