Haygrove Debating Team at Huish MUN (HuMUN)
On Saturday a group of 10 Year 9 students took part in the inaugural Huish MUN (HuMUN) in Richard Huish College representing the nations of USA and India. They covered a variety of topics from the governance of Kashmir, the Civil War in Myanmar, legalisation of Sex Work, whether economic tariffs should be used, should Net Zero be legally binding and, the issue of future governance of the moon. Our delegates were successful in passing multiple resolutions within these committees and played a vital role in shaping these debates calling upon their skills and experience that they have been working on for months.
Following this, our delegates took part in a General Assembly discussing a hypothetical situation where the US has sent troops to Israel to complete a regime change against the government of Iran. Our delegates again played a key role in this debate and frequently asked vital questions and spoke against motions that did not match their countries opinion. As well as this our India delegation led by Emily, Edith and Ollie successfully passed the only resolution of the General Assembly calling for immediate de-escalation and sanctions for any nations that do not work for peace within the situation.
In recognition for our delegates hard work, two were awarded best delegates by their committee chairs:
- Kieran for the best representation of his nations view and for continually fighting his corner in the face of some strong debates.
- Daniel for continually asking every speaker in the committee a question, encouraging other speakers to contribute and for really helping the chair to run the session.
We are so proud of all of our delegates both from their performance in the debates and how they represented Haygrove School on the day.
