Below are links to some of the important information you need to make the right decision for your family:
On Tuesday 19th June, 14 Year 8 students visited Bridgwater and Taunton College for a day organised by the college’s language staff and run by Oxford university lecturers.
There were 3 sessions throughout the day in which the first included:
The students were then divided into groups (French Spanish or German) and were presented with authentic literature texts and worked on their translation skills with Year 10 students from other schools.
Later on in the day, they received a lecture about poems and their relationships with buildings around the world followed by lunch in the college’s cafeteria. Students then unleashed their creative side to write their own version of the French poet Appolinaire’s calligrammes – where the shape of the words on the page are an important part of the meaning.
Haygrove students did themselves and the school very proud, particularly considering that they were the youngest there on the day. They came away enthused about studying languages, going to university and the relevance of learning a modern language for whatever they might choose to do in future.
“We were able to experience what life is like at college and made us seriously consider taking a language in future”
“We found out about the various professions involved with languages and how much difference they make to your job opportunities”
“ We had a lot of fun and was it really challenging for us in Spanish as we were doing Y10 work”!
“ It was challenging, educational & fun, a really cool experience”
“ I enjoyed the college visit, experiencing new things and learning that translation can be fun”!
