Year 7 Visit to Wessex Water’s Ashford Education Centre
Year 7 students recently enjoyed a fantastic and enriching day at Wessex Water’s Ashford Water Treatment Centre in Cannington. The visit offered a fascinating insight into how water is treated and made safe to drink, linking perfectly with students’ science learning and future studies.
The day began with an informative tour of the treatment works, where students discovered how water is collected from local reservoirs and passed through several stages of purification. They observed how chemicals are used to coagulate dirt, how activated carbon removes unpleasant tastes and odours, and how chlorine is carefully added, learning about the safety measures involved in handling this hazardous gas. Students also explored the surrounding reservoir, where they learned about the local wildlife and the importance of protecting natural habitats.
Back in the classroom, students tackled a hands-on challenge to design a pipe network that delivered water efficiently across a town—balancing cost, coverage, and flood prevention. They particularly enjoyed taking part in real scientific investigations, including pH, oxygen, chlorine, and phosphate testing on river water samples. There was also the chance to learn about a wide range of careers and apprenticeships available at Wessex Water, sparking interest in future opportunities.
It was a brilliant day full of learning, discovery, and fun—one that left students inspired and more aware of the vital role water treatment plays in our daily lives.
