We are so proud to share that Year 9 student Amelia was recently elected as part of the UK Youth Parliament for Sedgemoor!
The selection process for this role involved showcasing public speaking skills in front of a panel of judges. Candidates had 1 hour to prepare a 1 minute speech about topics they are passionate about putting forward for discussion in parliament. Squeezing all this into just 1 minute is a very difficult skill indeed!
Amelia chose to talk about the representation of youth in the media. "I want to help young people have a voice" said Amelia "I'm excited to start in this role and hope I can make a difference".
A Youth Participation officer at Somerset County Council commented "It was an absolute pleasure to work with the young people, you have every reason to be so proud of them! They were thoughtful, considerate, open to learning and they all focused throughout the day without wavering."
There are also a number of Year 9 students on the local advisory committee to the UKYP which will advise on issues that the organisation should discuss. These students are: Maisey P, Amelia, Fin, Maisy S and Eleanor.
The first advisory group meeting begins in March. We wish Amelia the best of luck, as well as all the other students that are involved
