With two shows on one night, this year’s school production had something for everyone. With 52 young performers involved, our talented students were divided into two casts to perform both Aladdin Jr. and a 20-minute abridged version of Matilda the Musical. The original productions of both are world-wide musical hits and these school-friendly adaptations proved to be equally popular with the parents, friends and staff who bought tickets to sit in the school hall and be thoroughly entertained.
Aladdin Jr. follows the story of Aladdin, a down-and-out hero and his three best friends who are granted wishes by the infamous Genie conjured up by the magic lamp which lead them on adventures that truly test their character. Roald Dahl’s anarchy-driven yet inspirational heroine, Matilda, dreams of a better life who, despite the oppressive rule of tyrant teacher Miss Trunchball, finds comfort from her unloving family in the classroom of teacher Miss Honey and solidarity with her classmates.
With sparkling performances by all the lead performers and superb back-up from the chorus of Aladdin’s ‘Agrabarians’ and Matilda’s classmates, this year’s Haygrove School production was a high-point in the school calendar.
“With nearly 100 students and staff involved both on stage and back stage, including the band, the set designers and the tech team, this production has been a huge affair and a total rollercoaster ride! But I can honestly say I am so proud of what everyone has achieved, our students have gone above and beyond the pull together two amazing shows,” said Miss Hannaby, Acting Head of Drama.
