Our students have just returned from a three-day trip to experience the Battlefields of Northern France and Belgium. After a visit to the giant World War II Nazi army bunker and museum, La Coupole, the group witnessed what it would have been like to live in the Ypres trenches preparing for battle.
“We saw the sand bags and where the artillery would have been fired and we went to ‘No Man’s Land’ and although the trenches were over grown, we could easily see where they had been.” said student Amandine Louis-Andre.
Whilst at Ypres, a wreath was laid at the Menin Gate Memorial to the Missing in memory of Gerald Bishop who lived on Durleigh Road, Bridgwater and attended Dr Morgan’s Grammer School. He died in the 3rd battle of Ypres and is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial to the missing along with 54,395 Commonwealth soldiers who died in that area and have no known grave.
Throughout the 3 days, the students saw many memorials to the fallen soldiers and were surprised and shocked that so many graves had ‘Known unto God’ rather than a name because they could not be identified.
