Parents and friends gathered in the Haygrove School Hall for a celebration of young people’s endeavour and to witness the presentation of Duke of Edinburgh Bronze and Silver Awards to over 50 students. The Year 10 and Year 11 students have worked hard to achieve this prestigious accolade; to succeed at the Bronze level they need to volunteer for 3 months, develop a new skill, take part in a sport or physical activity as well as complete both a practice and an assessed expedition that includes an overnight camp.
The guest speaker was the Bridgwater-based Methodist Minister Rev. Christopher Brown who is also Chaplain for the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme and a Haygrove School parent who is a regular helper on the school’s expeditions. He spoke of the challenges he has faced through his life and encouraged the audience to achieve the best they can by not giving up when presented with a difficult challenge or situation.
Mrs Cath Clark, Haygrove School’s Outdoor Education Co-ordinator also thanked the dedicated team of school staff who support the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme at Haygrove School and also expressed gratitude to the parents who help their sons and daughters achieve this respected award.
‘Haygrove School has one of the highest participation rates in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme and I am hugely proud of each student who completes the programme and enormously thankful to the huge amounts of support I get from the school and my local DofE colleagues,” said Mrs Clark.
