National Citizen Service (NCS)

Young Somerset  have been working with Haygrove School to offer the National Citizen Service (NCS) scheme during Summer 2019.

NCS is a once in a lifetime opportunity open to all 16 and 17-year olds in the country. It takes place outside of term time in the summer holidays over 4 weeks. NCS is a part-residential experience focused around fun and discovery, with 60 hours committed to a local community project. Students work with teams of twelve to fifteen, meeting new people from different backgrounds.

By taking part, students will be building skills for work and life, taking on exciting challenges, making new friends, and contributing to their community. Because the programme is funded by the government, students pay no more than £50 to take part.

This is a fantastic opportunity for our students and strongly encourage them to sign up. NCS is something that is recognised by employers and UCAS as a way to develop leadership, teamwork and communication skills and it’s a great use of part of the summer holidays.

The Programme:

Week 1: Your son or daughter will stay away from their local area and take on outward bound challenges, participating in activities such as archery, paddle boarding and climbing in their teams – with the focus on developing confidence and team building.

Week 2: Your son or daughter spends the week away again, but this time closer to home, typically in university style accommodation, building independence (for example cooking for themselves or budgeting), developing new skills and finding out more about the needs of their local community.

Weeks 3-4: Your son or daughter is back at home but continues to work in their team to give something back to their community by planning (30 hours) and delivering (30 hours) a social action project.

Graduation: You and your son or daughter will be invited to a graduation ceremony to celebrate their achievements and received a certificate signed by the Prime Minister.

To secure your son or daughter’s place, give Young Somerset a call directly on 01278 722100 you or they can find out more and sign up online at the NCS website:  www.ncswest.co.uk.  If you have any questions about NCS, please contact Young Somerset.
